Transmission service performed on a regular basis can help prevent a costly transmission repair. It is hard for many vehicle owners to put out the money for transmission service when it seems that their car is operating just fine.  However, remember that by neglecting basic transmission service, you could be paying out more in the long run with a costly transmission repair. So, put transmission service in your budget. Follow the service schedule listed in your owner’s manual to keep your car running strong.

Transmission Service typically includes the following services:

  • Fluid drained and replaced – Old or dirty transmission fluid is drained and replaced with new clean fluid. A ‘flush’ may be performed if necessary to remove all the old contaminants.
  • Filter replaced – The old filter is replaced with a new one.  If it is necessary to change the filter, make sure the seals are also replaced.
  • Codes and electronics checked – A computer flash can delete out-of-date error codes and driving history.  This aids the transmission in “remembering” the driving and shifting preferences of individual drivers.

Transmission Repair is usually needed for the following issues:

  • Faulty sensors – Faulty sensors send inaccurate information to the transmission which causes irregular or faulty shifting.
  • Cleaning -- This is very labor intensive and disables the vehicle for a lengthy period of time. The transmission unit is removed so that each part can be inspected, cleaned and replaced if necessary.
  • Faulty electrical system - Any required repairs are made and faulty parts replaced.
  • Installation of rebuilt or remanufactured unit – If the old unit is in more serious need of repair, a transmission rebuild or a remanufactured unit would be recommended.

Note to remember: Keeping your vehicle operating at its peak performance is as simple as having routine transmission service at the appropriate intervals.
